Short circuit withstand current vs PED Rated Short Circuit Current

Comparing apples with apples: Withstand short circuit current ratings aren't the same as PED short circuit current ratings

Sometimes, people confuse our portable earthing device’s short circuit current capabilities with cable short circuit withstand current capabilities.

Cable short circuit withstand capability refers to the cable’s ability to endure the thermal and mechanical stresses caused by a short circuit event without sustaining damage.

We design portable earthing devices to carry a specified amount of current for a certain length of time. This allows the network protection equipment to activate in response to the short circuit.

Our short circuit current capabilities differ from the short circuit withstand capabilities. We advise our customers to retire the earth set after it suffers a short circuit or fault current event because it will be damaged.

Therefore, we expect the cable to be damaged beyond repair. After a short circuit or fault event, we recommend retiring the entire PED. This recommendation is included in our supporting documentation.
